Review: Vive Guerrero! DVD

Our resident philosoher, Jay Shannon, takes a look the Eddie Guerrero Tribute Show presented by Big Vision Entertainment.

Big Vision Entertainment has released a video tribute to Eddie Guerrero. The card was presented on July 2, 2006 at the Denver Coliseum. Our hosts were Larry Rivera and Konnan.

The Matches:

Gallo Topada d Dan Kobrick & Jason King:

This was a Triple Threat Match that had multiple twists and turns. Kobrick is currently a rising star in NWA. The Gallo in this match was not the original.

Grade: B+

Mascarita Sagrada d Pirata Morgan (Minis Match):

Mascarita is possibly the smallest person to ever wrestle. To see him flying off the top rope will make your jaw drop. Both minis did the typical harrassment of the ref schtick. This match was a great mix of comedy and high-flying action.

Grade: A

“Los Chivos” (Enigma De Oro y Kayam) d Heavy Metal & Felino

This was a battle of brother teams. The match was fast and furious with near falls, left and right. Enigma took to pin in this one

Grade: B+

Black Tiger (Silver King) & Art “Tiger” Flores d “The Bad Dogs” Mr. Aguila & Damien 666

Silver King, of WCW fame, adopted the Black Tiger name for the night. Black Tiger was Eddie’s masked character in Japan. This match was full of high-flying moves.

Grade: B

Super Porky (Brazo de Plata) d Comandante Rojo (Commander Red) & Black Warrior

In Mexico, he’s known as Brazo de Plata (Silver Arm). In the US, he’s Super Porky. Regardless of what you call him, he’s a grotesquely obese wrestler who thinks he is sexy. This match was meant to be a Triple Threat Match, but it turned into a Handicap Match. Super Porky had the crowd laughing all during the match.

Grade: B-

Super Parka d L.A. Park

This match was a nod to the Eddie v Chavo feud. Super Parka is the uncle of L.A. Park (the original La Parka). There was a lot of dancing and a chair shot or two, but the match was rather flat.

Grade: C

Chavo, Mando & Hector Guerrero d Villano IV, Rey Misterio, Sr. and Haku

This should have been the main event. The ending of this match was classic with a Triple Frog Splash by the brothers. This match went all over the ringside area. Top match of the night.

Grade: A

Battle Royal

This match featured everyone on the card. It came down to Super Porky and Haku. Super Porky surprised the crowd by eliminating the Islander.

Grade: B+

Blue Demon, Jr. d El Hijo De Santo
2 out of 3 Falls match

This was the main event. El Hijo took the first fall, but Blue Demon came back to take two straight. El Hijo injured his leg during the second fall and just never recovered. Konnan talked about the love/hate relationship between Eddie and El Hijo de Santo. El Hijo de Santo, the highest paid Mexican wrestler, worked the show for free in tribute to Eddie.

Grade: A

The Bonuses

There were four extra matches on the disc. Only one featured Eddie. The bonus matches were:

1. Super Crazy d Eddie Guerrero at the very first Ring of Honor show. Super Crazy took the IWA Intercontinental title in the match.

2. Rey Misterio Jr. d Juventud Guerrera

3. Rey Misterio Jr & Octagon d KGB & Pentagon

4. Rey Misterio Jr., Super Calo & Leon Negro (Black Lion) d Juventud Guerrra, Psicosis & Halloween

The Positives

The matches were a good mix of comedy and action. The commentary from Konnan and Rivera was excellent. Konnan’s road stories of life with Eddie were touching. Having a full soundtrack in both English and Spanish was a nice touch.

The Negatives

The arena was poorly lit. Once the action spilled out of the ring, it was almost impossible to see what was going on. The long shots looked like bootleg video. The bonus matches were nice, but Eddie was only in one of them. If this was to be an Eddie tribute, then where was Eddie?

Final Grade: B-

In Conclusion:

Vive Guerrero! was an interesting tribute show. It wasn’t nearly as good as the Raw/Smackdown tribute shows, but it did actually feature people that were important in Eddie’s life. This video is worth a watch if you are a fan of Eddie or Lucha Libre.
