The Kayz Files – Arnie Katz

My Weekly (4/13) TNA Notebook!

The Kingfish Arnie Katz shares his thoughts about the preceding week in TNA and important issues raised during the 4/10 edition of iMPACT.

Teamwork, TNA Style

You’ve got to hand it to TNA, they did a very good job of setting up the Lethal Lockdown five-against-five contest for Lockdown. The Matt Morgan swerve, two weeks before the pay per view, riveted fans; attention on the two squads.

Actually, TRNA did a better job with Team Cage than with Team Tomko. The heel side consists of two tag teams and ames Storm and there are almost no plot elements that wouldn’t be there with just Tomko versus Cage.

The babyface team, on the other hand, came together one start at a time and each man has a little story. It would be nice if that story weren’t so similar to the one used for the last babyface squad a month ago, but it’s better than just slapping together a group of five guys and pretending that they have some reason to be together.

A Stupid Stipulation: Joe’s Retirement

The purpose of a stipulation is to add interest to a match and initiate the next plot angle that will come out of that match. TNA took a match – Kurt Angle versus Samoa Joe – that needed no such build up and saddled it with a stip that sucked some of the air out of the arena.

“Loser Leave Town” was a great stip in the Territory Era. Guys moved from area to area all the time, so keying a “Loser Leave Town” match to a forthcoming change of scene meant that sometimes the wrestler lost and the stip came into force.

The stipulation announced for Joe vs. Angle was that, if Joe didn’t win the title, he would leave TNA and all of wrestling. That stip is absolutely ridiculous, because there is no way it can or would be enforced. Samoa Joe isn’t quitting the ring; he could hardly keep a straight face when asked about it in the interview that PWD posted on Thursday.

Now, TNA has only two choices: They can insert a loophole in the stip or they can concede that every fans in the arena and watching at home knows that Samoa Joe is going to win the title.

You would think that TNA would’ve learned its lesson from the stip attached to Team 3D, which it ended up totally ignoring.

That’s it for today. Check back tomorrow for another installment of the Internet’s fastest-rising daily column.
