Words from Strozilla – The Stro

Ric Flair & NWA

Nobody goes toe to toe with The Stro without learning something about the inner working of professional wrestling. The man formerly known as The Maestro devotes this column to Ric Flair, the NWA and more!

2008 so far has been a very busy one for me between possible film work
,wrestling, school, and marketing committments. Also have plans in the works
to start on my autobiography book. So as soon as more develops, I will let you
all know. It’s great to once again be back involved with the NWA representing the
NWA-MSW as the NWA-MSW heavyweight champion. NWA-MSW is a great company
loaded with season veterans and great upcoming talents which is aired every week on
Fox West Virginia TV. I currently am involved with the “SBD” cliche which consists of myself along with NWA-MSW tag team champions
Johnny Blast and Diablo Jr.. Have always had the goal of having a run as NWA World
champion before I retire. Have always held the NWA world title in high regard as it’s lineage
is legendary in this business. So I really hope I get that opportunity to do so.

I think it is fantastic that “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair is being inducted in
this year’s Hall of Fame! To say he has been a great influence on mine and
other’s career’s would be a major understatement. Thru my career, I have been
very fortunate to meet legends like Lou Thesz, Harley Race, Killer Kowalski,
Karl Gotch, The Funks,Bruno Sammartino,Briscos, Youngblood, Ricky Steamboat,
The Andersons, etc.. But being raised in the Mid-Atlantic area, Ric Flair definitely was
a major inspiration to me. How many people you know could come back from a
near fatal back injury and be 16 time world champion? The best wrestler, the best interview,
all around the best ever! Simply amazing! I remember the late Chief Wahoo McDaniels tell me
about some of the classics he has had with Flair. It has been also such an honor to have wrestled
some of Flair’s greatest opponents like the late Wahoo, Ron Garvin, etc.. I am so proud to have
grown up looking up to him and getting the opportunity to work with one of the greatest wrestling
legends that ever lived. On behalf of myself and every passionate wrestler and fan out there, thank
you Ric Flair ! Long overdue! Here is to you Nature Boy! “WHOOOO!”

It is great to hear my friend Jake “The Snake” Roberts is returning to action and doing much better.
My thoughts and prayers have been with him and it is really good to see him in better spirits. Go Jake!

Tales from the Stro Kingdom

“About four years ago or so I was at an autograph signing with WWE Hall of Famer “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas along with “Enos” of the Dukes of Hazzard TV series at Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Everything was going smoothly when I heard people running outside. I looked out the window to see a tornado touching down in the ocean appearing to be heading this way from a distance. Everyone was heading out the door, except Enos who was staring outside the window. I stopped myself and came by to join Enos who was watching the tornado from a distance. “That dang tornado ain’t going nowhere” says Enos as it appeared to be weakening and eventually went away. Later that evening I bumped into Ricky Morton of the Rock n Roll Express who was nearby and asked him if he has seen it. “Seen it? It was right next door to my motel!”

“It was a another wild night back in 95 in Nashville,
Tennessee at the fairgrounds for the USWA as I was in
the middle of a six man tag team match with myself,
Tommy Rich, and Doug Gilbert against PG13 and Brian
Christopher. The action began to spill on the outside.
A fan who was dressed like a member of security jumped
over the railings and was going after Tommy Rich with
a knife. I quickly grabbed his wrist and took him down
to the floor. I yelled for security as I was holding
him and they came to hold him down. As I went to
release him, he tried to grab my hair. But I turned
his wrist slightly to release the pressure and got up.
A riot was beginning to break out among the fans at
ringside. I quickly grabbed Tommy and Doug and all of
us went back in the ring until things got settled
down. After the match, we were just happy to get out
of the arena in one piece.”
